Van Improvements

After our first van trial on the North Shore we came back with some new ways to utilize the van. We spent a week traveling across Wisconsin and Michigan. This time allowed us to be more comfortable in the van and make it even more like home.  Below are some changes we made that allow us to live more comfortably in the van for trial #2. Added a hitch cargo carrier with storage bin. Between …

Dirt in fingernails, sweat rolling down the face, legs shaking, feet blistered, dehydrated meals, dehydration in the body, and a goal in mind because giving up isn’t an option.  That’s what the Appalachian Trail experience is about for a lot of people. An estimated 3 million people visit the Appalachian Trail every year according to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Hiking Mt. Washington

Part of the Presidential Range in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and standing at 6,288 feet, Mt. Washington is the tallest peak in the Northeastern US. While it stands over 6,000 feet, the elevation we gained while hiking to the summit was about 4,300 feet since the trailhead stands at elevation. That is still plenty of elevation gain! Mt. Washington sees nearly 250,00 visitors each year so it’s only a benefit to tourism that …

2019 Boundary Waters Newbies

The process of prepping for a trip into the Boundary Waters is one that we’ve mastered more and more each year. Although this was only our third trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), the planning felt so much easier than the first time. Like anything in life, the more experience, the more natural it will feel. We were extra excited about planning our recent trip because two couples who had never been …

Long Days on Vermont’s Long Trail

This is the oldest long-distance trail in the country built between 1910 and 1930.  We spent 2 nights, 3 days backpacking on the Long Trail as part of our road trip last summer. The difficulty of this trail is more than we were …

Some want a more intimate and romantic setting. Some couples like my brother and his wife Aly want a destination. They wanted to turn …

‘Hike in Place’ – 5 Hikes Near Our Home

We are finding that local parks are becoming increasingly busier during the time of COVID-19 and the warming spring weather, which is awesome! With all the ‘shelter in place’ orders being implemented to slow the spread of this virus, we believe that it is also a responsible thing to ‘hike in place’ during these times. This means hike local to reduce your impact to communities you might travel to on your way to the trail. …
